We meet the business leaders who are helping shape the future of work. We ask them to tell us about their Workplace launch. We share examples of how the platform is helping them find new ways of working. And we gain real-life insights into the Workplace experience…

This month, we chat with Jim Loree, President and CEO of Stanley Black & Decker – a leading diversified industrial and the world’s number one manufacturer of tools and storage equipment, with iconic brands like Craftsman, DEWALT, STANLEY, BLACK+DECKER, Mac Tools, and more.

The company is also the #2 leader in commercial electronic security and a global leader in engineered fastening – and has been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability index for 7 consecutive years. The people of Stanley Black & Decker design and build equipment and services for those who make the world

Why did you choose Workplace?

Why did you choose Workplace?

With 58,000 employees in more than 60 countries, Stanley Black & Decker was looking for a new way to communicate, collaborate and propel its business forward. A platform that would connect people across time zones and over language barriers in as efficient and timely a manner as possible – and play a key part of the digital transformation of a 175-year-old industrial company.

As Jim says: “Even though I’d been with the company for 17 years leading up to it, as the new CEO working to embed a new business strategy and company purpose through the organization, I knew we needed a new tool.”

“Workplace is incredibly intuitive. And the translation capabilities make it an amazing tool for a multinational like us.”

And Workplace by Facebook was the right solution. “Workplace is incredibly intuitive – if you know how to use Facebook, you essentially know how to use Workplace. Plus the translation capabilities make it an amazing tool for a multinational like us. I immediately knew this could be really powerful for our global enterprise.”

How did the launch go?

The Workplace implementation was a ‘mind-blowing’ success. People took to the platform quickly and adoption rates were high. “We launched it at our company’s first-ever global employee town hall, and we had thousands of users in the first 24 hours.”

“I’ve never felt more connected to our employees around the world.”

“I’ve never felt more connected to our employees around the world.”

And that initial global enthusiasm set a trend. More than a year after the launch, there are now tens of thousands of active users on Workplace. “In my 18+ years at the company,” Jim says, “I’ve never felt more connected to our employees around the world.”

The Workplace platform provides people with game-changing work tools. And Stanley Black & Decker wasted no time putting these tools to good use. Straight off the bat, the organization began to use Workplace to broadcast and share information.

Not only is this keeping people on the same page wherever they are, it’s also reinforcing Stanley Black & Decker’s values across the organization.

“It’s enabled us to embed our purpose – For Those Who Make The World – in accelerated and contemporary ways,” says Jim. “And there’s nothing quite like waking up in the morning [from my U.S. home] and scrolling through the newsfeed to see what’s already happening in Asia and Europe.”

The ways people began using the platform became more sophisticated. It went beyond sharing information and staying in touch and quickly evolved into using Workplace to collaborate on a daily basis all over the world.

One of the key enablers for this was the power of translations in News Feed. Translations have given people the ability to communicate instantly with colleagues in their local language and that’s built an inclusive sense of community like never before.

“We’re more productive and profitable. We have Workplace groups in place that are generating revenue.”

Jim believes this is transformational. It’s joining people together and enabling better conversations. But these deeper relationships and better collaborations are also allowing the business to thrive. “Workplace is fundamentally changing how we work at Stanley Black & Decker. We’re more productive and profitable. We have Workplace groups in place that are helping us generate revenue and create connections to better serve our customers.”

How can we make Workplace better?

“To better connect and integrate with the software in our IT environment,” says Jim. And that’s awesome feedback. In fact, it’s feedback we’ve been listening to. The new Workplace Integration Directory now lists over 50 integrations with the software and SaaS applications that people use every day.

And we’re working hard to build more ways to enable organizations like Stanley Black & Decker to find new and better ways of working together.
